World's Largest Seafood Restaurant Company Celebrates Legendary
Treasure Island Pirate and Company Icon: Long John Silver
LOUISVILLE, Ky., September 18, 2003 - Long John Silver's today announced that on Friday, September 19 it will officially celebrate International Talk Like A Pirate Day at its restaurants. Long John Silver's was founded in 1969 and is named after the famous pirate and cook that sailed upon the Hispaniola in the popular book, Treasure Island.
Pirate Long John Silver was known for his spirit of adventure and search for treasure. On September 19, Long John Silver's restaurants will be sharing their own bounty of treasure by offering consumers a great discount on their popular Treasure Chest Family Meal and free pirate hats for all.
"What better place for families to celebrate the day than at the world's most popular seafood restaurant named after one of the most famous pirates of all time," said Mike Baker, chief marketing officer, Long John Silver's. "We think consumers will go overboard for our discounted Treasure Chest Family Meal and free pirate hats," said Baker. "Who knows, Talk Like a Pirate Day could one day be as big as Halloween," Baker added.
Talk Like A Pirate Day began in 1995 when creators Mark Summers and John Baur were playing racquetball in Albany, Ore. as one reached for a tough shot and exclaimed
"Aaaaarrrr!" Spontaneously, the two began speaking in pirate jargon, complete with accents, and the idea was born. They repeat this tradition every year and their light-hearted fun has caught on with the media.
"The response has been amazing," Summers said. "People have been writing to us literally from all over the world." Baur added, "We almost couldn't believe it when Long John Silver's decided to join in."
Here's an easy way to incorporate pirate talk in everyday language:

To celebrate the fun, Long John Silver's has dropped the price of the Boatload of Seafood Treasure Chest Family Meal by $1.00 making it only $14.99 for Friday, September 19. The Treasure Chest Family Meal includes 8 batter-dipped fish, 10 batter-dipped shrimp, 28 crunchy shrimp, 12 hushpuppies and a choice of two sides (fries, cole slaw or corn).
